Sharing books with the world

Bookcrossing has at the heart of it a love for literature and kindness toward people. This makes it a remarkable activity with a reach that stretches around the world.

It started back in 2001 when a man named Ron Hornbaker was inspired by the concept behind wheresgeorge.com, where currency serial numbers are logged online and then each bill is tracked on its journey. He applied this to the sharing of books: each book is registered at bookcrossing.com and receives a unique BookCrossing Identication number. The person registering the book then makes a journal entry about the book, relating his or her thoughts about the book and possibly a short synopsis of the plot or contents.

The next step is to "wild release" the book--that is, to leave the book somewhere in public and then let serendipity run its course. The hope is that someone will pick it up, take it home, and make a new journal entry with his or her thoughts about the experience.

People who pick up the books may remain anonymous, and they may keep the book or pass it on in the spirit of BookCrossing, thus helping to make the world a library, which is one of BookCrossing's mottoes.

The person who originally registered the book will receive an email when the book is found and journaled, which gives most members a thrill because it's delightful to know that our gifts have brightened someone's day. And the person who finds and journals the book has the option of joining, as well, and in so doing will also be able to track the journey of the book if he or she decides to leave it in the wild as well.

There are never any strings attached--the books are freely given, and there is no requirement to join.

Contributor's Note

I have a personal goal to release 100,000 books in my lifetime. Kind of an insane amount, but if I keep at it I may get there by the time I'm 120 years old. I want to do this because those books will keep traveling even after I'm no longer around, so it's a kindness that self-perpetuates. Being involved in BC has introduced me to authors I never would have tried. The members are passionate about books and recommend their own favorite reads. If you love books, take a peek. :)
